conviction
a portrait of the home of Violet Hobaugh, over four years
stumbled upon whilst driving the back roads of the rural pennsylvanian town of palmyra.

the words written on every surface tell the story of a woman whose mental illness consumed her, as those who tried to help her became her imagined enemies and poisoners.

a fuller version of this sad story is available on my blog here for the backstory and here for my ruminations.  I've also included articles in this set from 1992 and 2004.

Violet passed away the week of Christmas 2009. I visited her vacant home in April 2010 to document the entire property, though much of what she had painted was faded or overgrown with ivy. Read about my final visit here.
